IOM Racing Sat 28th October

There is racing for the IOM this coming Saturday 28th October.  This is an additional afternoon in the Summer Series for the IOM (#10) having lost a couple of afternoons earlier in the season.  It would be nice to see a good turnout of boats.  Please make your entry soon if you are planning to attend.

DF65 & DF95 Social racing 2023 – 25/10/23

The DF fleet arrived to a more or less flat calm, and there was some discussion about whether racing could take place. As so often happems, while this was going on a slight breeze from the far end appeared, and after a short delay there was enough to get round the course.

Although the breeze remained patchy to say the least, there was some very good racing all across the fleet.

After 5 races it went completely flat again and it was agreed that the day was over.

There were 4 winners out of 5 races, with Clive winning 2, but James Douglas ran out the overall winner with no race wins but a string of seconds.

The next 4 boats were covered by 2 points with final positions as shown below.

Many thanks to Dave who once again ran all the racing.

Final Positions were:

  1. James Douglas               8 pts
  2. John Carlin                     10 pts           1 win
  3. Clive Warren                  11 pts           2 wins
  4. Alan Watkinson            12 pts           1 win

  6. Neil Westbrook             21 pts
  7. Richard Walker             29 pts
  8. John Beech                      30pts
  9. Dave Howard                  35 pts

  11. Malcolm Harvey           39 pts

DF95 Social Racing

Following on from the morning DF65 sailing 7 skippers stayed behind to partake in the DF95 sailing. The wind was very similar to the morning with it generally coming down the lake but also swinging through 45deg making it difficult for the helms. Picking the right shifts to take was paramount. A slightly extended lunch was taken to allow the breeze to fill in for the first race. Richard Walker had a slight advantage by using a very unofficial A+ rig. It was really interesting to monitor the performance of the larger rig, which was approx 20% bigger than the standard A rig. As there were only seven boats Clive oversaw the start sequence and the first over the line recorded the finishing places. The same course as the morning was used and single lap races were the order of the day, due to lack of wind and to attempt to get 6 races completed
As expected the “A+rig” was too much of an advantage and Richard won every  race except the last which he didn’t start, Clive was very consistent finishing with 5 second places and the remainder of the places were closely fought by the rest of the field with Alan finishing in 3rd
thanks to a first place in the last race

Final Standings:
  1. Richard Walker         72    5pts  (A+ rig)
  2. Clive Warren              93  10pts
  3. Alan Watkinson        23  16pts

  5. Malcolm Harvey  2019 21pts

DF65 & DF95 Social Racing 2023 – 18/10/23

Fifteen boats turned out this week to enjoy a decent Easterly breeze with A rig being the choice of the day, after some indecision as to whether it was A+, A or B.  Peter had a go with A rig and had no issues and the wind was probably even A+ when we started, but soon picked up and was close to being B rig in the gusts by the time we finished.

Having had a trial sail to give an idea of the best rig, Peter then donned the waders and moved the all the marks around to give a decent course and start-line – one that could be either Port or Starboard biased depending on the gust coming down the course.  So plenty of decisions to be made in the pre-start period.

Mike was quick off the blocks for Race 1 whilst a few other front runners were either OCS or doing turns for Port/Starboard incidents.  Peter then took 6 of the next 7 races, with Neil taking Race 3 and John C the final two lap race as he nipped across the line in front of Alan who had led the fleet until the very end when he had a big header just prior to the finish.  Other notable efforts came from Andrew, Clive, Tony  and finally Jon, who was unfortunately taken out whilst in the lead near the finish (and on Starboard), leaving the door open for Peter to nip through for the win.  Final Results below.

A good morning with plenty of learning points, tuning assistance and good practice for those sailing in the DF65 TT coming up at the weekend.  Thanks must go to Dave Williams who opted to run the racing rather than sailing and kept everyone in line with several OCS calls and one general recall in the 9 races sailed.

  1. Peter Baldwin           63   9pts   (6 wins)
  2. Mike De St Paer        35  24pts  (1 win)

DF95 Social Sailing

After the morning DF65 sailing, 7 skippers stayed behind to sail their 95s, it would have been 8 but unfortunately Neil Westbrook, brought his wrong transmitter. The wind was very similar to the morning session when we started so A rigs were given the green light, The same course was also used.
Paul Little opted out of sailing and was our RO for the afternoon, many thanks Paul.
The first race was a single lap to test the rig set up, all the following races were all 2 laps. Dave Howard was a bit late missing the first 2 races as he put the finishing touches to the rigging  of his new 95 (with a little help from Peter) prior to its maiden voyage.
John Carlin was off to a flyer winning the first 2 races. The wind continued to increase during the 2nd race and the boats started to nosedive downwind so it was decided to change to B rigs, which were perfect for the new conditions. John continued his winning ways with another win in race 3, before Clive broke his run in race 4. Richard was very consistent notching up 5 third places in the 6 races sailed, Frans and Mal although not their finest hour enjoyed the sail,  finally Dave Hs maiden voyage was successful with a 4th place, but had to leave early.
Final standings after 6 races with 1 discard
1  John Carlin          –   6  (4 wins, 1 x 2)
2  Clive Warren       –   8  (2 wins, 3 x 2)
3  Richard Walker   – 15  (5 x 3)
4  Frans King            – 17  (1 x 2)
5  Malcolm Harvey – 22  (1 x 2)
6  Dave Howard      – Only one race

DF/RG65 Summer 2023 #9

There was a keen 10 knot WNW breeze down the lake as everyone arrived for the afternoon.  Although the sun was out the weather had turned decidedly cooler this week and initially it looked like A rig conventional for the RG65 and A for the DF65.  However, a heavy rain/hail shower killed the wind for a while before the start and a number opted for A swing rigs on the RG and most for the A+ on the DF.  The wind soon returned as racing started and led to some changes of rig (enforced by gear failure in some instances) and most RG were using A or low aspect A whilst a few hardy souls kept with the A+ on the DF.

The first session of 10 races for the fleet of 7 RG65’s Peter Baldwin made the best of the conditions in his Uno and took 3 wins, with Alan Bennett (Ivy) and Bill Culshaw (Ivy) who had one each.  After the break Alan had the best run of 4 wins and Bill who took the other.  This left Peter with the overall win by just one point and Alan 3 points further back in third.

In the DF fleet of 4 boats, wins were shared between Neil Westbrook and Tony Sedgwick with 4 each and Clive Warren with 2.  Neil and Tony were tied on scored races and so the overall win went to Tony due to his win in the last race.

A good day  with thanks to Dave Williams for organising the score card and scoring the fleet, plus starting and finishing in the second half.

DF65 Social Racing 2023 – 11/10/23

Incessant rain, with very light winds greeted the 11 keen sailors.

Sally decided to take her turn at RO for which all were grateful. A+ was the only choice of rig, the course the same as the previous week so racing started with eagle eyed Sally calling a general recall on the first race, with a reminder that the start is on the bell not ‘one’. Several individual recalls occurred during the morning. The conditions suited John C. who took five wins but he did not have it his own way with Andrew and Alan on his stern.

Our new ex dinghy sailing members, Jon and Tony, were having their own battle with Tony finishing on top due to more 2nd places. After 10 races and the wind easing it was decided to call it a day. Many thanks to Sally for her RO duties.

  1. John Carlin                                 13pts 5 wins
  2. Andrew Potter                           19pts 2 wins
