RG65 Popup Open and Summer Series #3

The Birkenhead club decided to run a ‘pop up’ RG65 Open Event with an 11am start on the Saturday of the Jubilee weekend and we managed to get 9 entries, 2 Pocket Rockets (Dave Creed), 6 Uno (Caccerelli/VAM) and 1 Argon (Sails etc/Bantock).
The wind was kinder to us than expected and came mainly down from Gautby Road with shifts and some quite heavy gusts that saw most of the fleet diving downwind at some point. Most opted for a slightly lower aspect rig but Martin, Bill and Graham all opted for there full height swing rigs. We also welcomed Bill Culshaw to the RG fleet this week with his borrowed Pocket Rocket from Peter. Lets hope he returns, but he did mention that he had completed 14000 steps during the day, although we don’t normally sail 18 races in an afternoon!
The racing was a lot closer than normal throughout the fleet and it was only in a few races that the leader broke away from the rest of the fleet to win by a large margin.
With the absence of Bernie, (we all send our best wishes to Bernie who had an op in the week), we decided that each skipper would drop out of 2 races to take up start and finishing duties and score these races with zero points after some discussion.
In the end it was Martin with a fantastic 9 wins that took top honours (and the winners bottle) with Graham in second place with just 2 wins and Peter completing the podium with 4 wins, John in 4th was the last race winner on the day with 3 wins, just 4 points separating the top three.
Pictures thanks to Bill Culshaw and Alan Watkinson.
This event was used as a tune-up for the next RG65 TT at Bournville on Saturday 11th June – Entry via the MYA website.

DF65 Social Racing 2022 #22 (1/6/22)

Only 6 sailors but with the A+ wind at times straight down the lake 10 races were held. With the few boats it was decided to do without a RO with the first over the finish line doing the marking. During the racing several boats were swapped to see if there were any glaring tuning errors.

IOM Summer Series 2022 #3 (21/5/22)

Due to a series of unfortunate events  3 off the original 6 made it to the start line.  A rig down the middle, with a funny turn around tea break.
All had their moment in the sun.
Thanks to Bernie, Dave and a mug of tea from Jack

DF65 Social Racing 2022 #20 (18/5/22)

10 sailors arrived to warm weather and sunshine, but again some very flukey wind conditions at Gautby Road lake.

Sailing skills and tempers were tested as the wind circled round the lake in mostly unpredictable directions, with both lulls and gusts, meaning close attention to the trim of the A+ sail rigs was paramount at all times.

Conditions made for very close racing as the points testify. With thanks to John Carlin and Mike de St Paer for acting as Race Officers, frequently needing eagle eyes to judge the close places at the finish line.

DF65 Social Racing #19 (11/5/22)

Just half a dozen sailors arrived, to be welcomed by a damp morning with almost windless conditions. Not very promising for a days racing, so we decided to just have un-scored social racing session and managed a few single lap races.  Start line and course direction was alternated, as the light winds shifted in a most unpredictable manner, as did the results of each race.

The wind did steady and fill to a fresh westerly towards the end of the morning, which gave us a final two lap race to finish the day.
