IOM Summer Series #1 12/6/21

Once again the weather served up a great afternoons IOM sailing with an 8-10 knot breeze (with some stronger gusts early on) from the WNW giving a beat up the lake from the Clubhouse end.  There some great sun as well, although the temperature at the lakeside caught a few out who arrived in a T shirt having thought that it would be warmer in the sunshine.

Racing got underway soon after 1pm after Peter had shifted the marks around slightly to make the best of the breeze, although start line often proved to be a bit too port biased in the shifting breeze. Bill Culshaw started the day well for the win in Race 1, with Peter Baldwin taking Race 2, before Brad Gibson put together a string of 4 wins before a break for a drink and chat in the sunshine.

Refreshed after the break Andrea Roberts took Race 7, then Brad added another win in Race 8.  Not to be outdone in the friendly family duel that ran all afternoon, Martin Roberts gained an important win in Race 9, before Brad rounded out the afternoon by winning all of the last three races.  This comfortably gave Brad the afternoon, with Peter in second only one point ahead of Andrea in third who won the family duel by 4 points from Martin.

There was some very close racing throughout the fleet with many photo finishes to cope with by our usual finishing team of Jack and Bernie. Thanks to them as usual and to everyone for sailing on a taxing afternoon with good rules observance and some very helpful comments and advice from our top helms.

After 12 races

DF65 Social Racing 2021 #11 9/6/21

A light A+ wind from over the houses greeted the twelve sailors today. Neil volunteered to don the waders and to move the start line so we could sail from the far side of the lake a finish mark was placed half way up by the bench which enabled Stan Metcalfe our RO for the day to observe the races. It was a struggle heading for the windward mark, sometimes close-hauled and then a reach and to add to this an underwater obstruction which if you were unlucky enough to hit, stopped the boat dead in the water. Overall seven different sailors managed at least one win with Mike taking the overall spot due to his consistency with nothing less than a fourth after discards. Many thanks again to Stan who kept the 10 races racing flowing.

RG/DF65 Summer Series #1

There were 8 RG65’s (but no DF65’s) for the first in this Summer Series of races now that restrictions are easing and Saturday attendances typically less than the limit of 18 entries.  Unfortunately, the sailors were greeted to a light and fickle breeze that couldn’t make up its mind whether to blow from the East or West.

The first race was started near to the clubhouse, but ended up being a broad reach to start, although most points of sailing were covered during the race, with John Brierley taking the first win of the day.  The fleet then moved ends to start in the opposite direction for race 2, which was taken by Dave Williams in his new Uno on its second outing.  Races 3 and 4 went to Graham Elliott sailing the Electronics after servo issues in the Argon meant a retirement in Race 2.  By now (and after an early refreshment break) the wind had picked up to a 5 or 6 knot WNW breeze with some good shifts and variations in pressure around the course.  Martin Roberts took his only win in Race 5 and then John had his second in Race 6.  The afternoon ended with Graham mopping up the last three races and the afternoon.  Martin’s consistency gave him second, just one point ahead of John in third.

DF65 Social Racing 2021 #10 2/6/21

A good sunny day with the wind from the Clubhouse end, A+ was the chosen rig of the day. With Neil volunteering to don the waders, one of the start line marks was moved to make a non biased start. Several boats were keen to get going but fell foul of the start line judge. A few boats had electrical problems and had to retire and then with the wind strength increasing the last few races saw several more retire. 10 races were held with David Potter and Mike de St Paer taking 9 race wins between them, with David just coming out the winner. John Carlin took third place with a good consistent sail. Many thanks to the RO for this week, Dave Williams.

IOM Club Racing 2021 #5 29/5/2021

   A select group of six IOM helms turned out for this afternoon at the start of warmer weather. With a high pressure sat over the area hopes of a decent sail weren’t very high when arriving at 12:00 to a flat calm lake with the merest hint of a breeze.  Fortunately by the start of racing a gentle 5 or 6 knots was blowing from the NW which held for most of the afternoon leading to close racing with a number of place changes if you got the shifts wrong.Under the eagle eye of Start Line Judge Dave Williams, John Brierley started the day well with a close win over Andrea Roberts trying out the “Vanilla” sailed by Martin two weeks ago.  Andrea then proceeded to dominate the fleet by taking the next three wins, before Martin took race 5 and Andrea the final win before a short break.Martin spent his break on re-rigging the jib on the Rubix of Charles Legg (sporting a new set of Housemartin sails), which helped place him in the mix for most races.

Racing re-started in a slightly lighter breeze, although it soon returned to previous levels.  Peter won Races 7 and 9, Martin took Race 8 and Andrea the final race of the day.  Neil Westbrook took several second places in his Widget, proving that this older design can still hold its own in Club racing.

Andrea took the afternoon comfortably, with Peter second and Martin third, followed by Neil in fourth and without a race win.  Thanks again must go to Bernie and Jack for running our racing and the photos are courtesy of Dave Williams (whilst he wasn’t watching the line and calling us back).
