Dragonforce Winter Series 17th Jan 2018

Despite the yellow warnings for wind from the Met Office, 9 sailors descended on the lake and using a mixture of ‘B’ and ‘C’ rigs completed 10 races.

Neil’s boat suffered a burned out winch and Sally kindly volunteered  to be race officer for the remaining races after struggling to control her boat with the ‘B’ rig  and not having a ‘C’ suit. With Dave P. also dropping out, only 6 boats completed the day.

IOM 2017/18 Winter Series #3

Another great turn out for the 3rd race in the Winter series. Obviously a few skippers getting some early practice in for the upcoming European Championships being held in Croatia in April.

The wind was a medium to heavy top suit strength straight down the lake from the club house end.

The first race was a two boat match race at the front between  Rob Walsh and Paul Allen with Rob just getting his nose ahead by the finish, this was the first of many wins for Rob who took all but one race.

The day saw quite a few skippers tasting the front of the fleet at some time, Bill sailing his newly launched boat eventually ironed out some problems with his trim and put some solid results in. Martin, Graham and Mike all chose to sail their Widgets and all sailed well to register some very good scores. There were also impressive races by Alan and Sally who threatened the top 3 in a few races. Dave’s very impressive looking new boat from the Dave Creed workshop showed good speed in quite a few races.

Many thanks to Jack and Bernie on the start and finish line and also Joyce for the welcome cup of hot tea at the break.

Dragonforce Winter Series #3 20th Dec 2017

A small band of sailors arrive in drizzle and with no sign of any wind, so adjourned briefly to tea/coffee and some of Mrs Watkinson’s exceedingly nice mince pies.

Then, on cue the breeze filled in from the North West allowing 10 closely fought races to be sailed.

Marblehead Santa Open Report/Results

After driving through floods and arriving in torrential rain, the Marblehead skippers probably didn’t hold out any great hopes for the day ahead, but as the first race started, the sky cleared and the wind filled in straight down the lake ensuring a terrific day of close racing.

Early front runner was Martin Roberts with various boats having their moments, but by lunchtime Darin Ballington and Colin Walton from Manor Park, and Graham Elliott from the home club had also established themselves at the top end of the leader board.

After lunch Darin started to claw back Martin’s early lead and after 13 races it was all square.

The final race was to be a shoot out to determine the overall winner and with that, the fleet hit the start line as one, bang on the hooter, with Martin tucked under Darin’s lee bow .

With both the light and wind fading Martin used all his local experience to grind out the win to take the event overall.

Next year the club is intending to hold open Marblehead racing at West Kirby so keep an eye on our website for dates. All welcome.
