RG/DF65 Winter Series 2022 #5 (12/2/22)

7 skippers turned out for the latest round of the clubs RG65/DF65 series, but with no DF’s, all 7 opted to sail there RG65’s.
The wind unfortunately came from the houses for the first 4 races with skippers opting for various sail plan/rigs, some opted for swing B rigs, some opted for full area reduced height conventional rigs and some opting for full height conventional rigs. It was all about managing the vicious gusts.
Although Graham Elliott sailing his Electronica dominated the day with 11 wins losing out to John Brierley sailing his Uno in race 2, there were some decent displays from other skippers. Dave Williams sailed well in the last 4 races scoring a 3,5,4,2. Charles Legg sailed well in the later races and Alan Watkinson starting the day well with a brace of 3rds.
Races 5 to 12 saw the wind come around and blow straight down the lake that brought Martin Roberts into play sailing his Pocket Rocket, he scored 5 second places in the last 6 races of the day.
The day was definately all about rig choice and rig plan and I am sure a few will be swapping there lower aspect swing rigs for conventioal rigs.
Race winners on the day were Graham Elliott (Electronica) 11 wins and John Brierley (Uno) with 1 win. Many thanks to Jack for making the tea and Bernie for starting and scoring us.

DF65 Social Racing 2022 #6 (9/2/22)

Sixteen Sailors turned out for this weeks DF65 Race No 6 of the Winter Series.

It was a brisk and chilly Westerly breeze, with ‘A’ rigs the choice of sails for the day.  The breeze stayed steady at about force 2 – 3, with choppy conditions down at the start line and the lower gate proving a bit tricky, with lighter conditions up at the top end of the course.

Today’s Race officer – James Douglas – did a grand job of keeping the racing flowing quickly, and handled the difficult task of policing the start line in poor light on the far side of the lake. Neil and Richard both suffered radio equipment problems, significantly affecting their results today, but they will be back fighting fit for more DF65 action.

Great racing as ever, in the growing DF65 fleet, with everyone enjoying a high standard of racing and camaraderie.

IOM Winter Series 2021 #3 (5/2/22)

Everyone was surprised to see so little wind on the water whilst selecting their No1 rigs after a forecast of winds in the high teens and gusts in the 30’s.  Helped by a WSW breeze giving some shelter from the houses and a spell of rain allowed everyone to stay in No1 rig for all 12 races.  There were some difficult times during the afternoon if you caught the gust in the wrong place, but the gusts were always short lived and the wind could soon abate leaving you almost becalmed for a short while.  There were 9 club sailors and one visitor in Colin McGinnis all the way from Dundee joining us for the afternoon.
John Brierley won the first race and followed it with a second in Race 2, when Martin Roberts took his first of three consecutive wins.  He looked to have the measure of the conditions before John won Race 5, but with Martin 2nd.  Bill Culshaw then had his first win in Race 6 after a slower start, then John had another win in Race 7 before the break.  After the break, it seems that Jack must have given Bill a little something extra in his tea as he scored three wins and two seconds in the final 5 races, with his run spoilt only by wins for John and Peter Baldwin.
This left Bill with an unassailable lead with that final run of form to take the day, with Martin in second three points behind and John two further points back in third.
Thanks must go to Dave Williams and Bernie for running the racing and of course Jack for making a brew at half time.

DF65 Social Racing 2022 #5 (2/2/22)

17 sailors arrived ready to battle against strong winds! In the end it was A rig, possibly even A+. The course was set using the whole lake starting from the clubhouse, windward mark to port, spreader to port through the gate to the finish half way up the lake.

A good start was the key and full use of the subtle wind shifts. Mike read the conditions from the off to claim two firsts and a second. It took John B. these races to get into his stride and from then on dominated the racing Thanks to the RO Alan Watkinson for setting the course and giving us 9 races.

DF65 Social Racing 2022 #4 (26/1/22)

The 17 sailors who turned up this week were greeted by a light a fickle wind from a SSW/SW direction.  Race Officer Richard Walker aided by Neil and Peter set a course of a single windward/leeward lap using most of the lake length.  This typically gave at least one windward(ish) leg , although that could be in either direction.  Peter Baldwin set off with a good initial setup for the conditions, winning the first two races.  There were then different winners in the next four races with Richard Robinson, John Carlin, Neil Westbrook and Alan Watkinson all having their time at the front of the fleet.  Peter then managed wins in races seven and eight (2 laps) to take the overall win.  He was pushed to the very end by Richard Robinson in second and consistent Mike De St Paer in third.

Thanks to Richard for running the racing today, assisted by both the race leaders and latterly by Bernie at the finish. There were some very close and fast finishes as the wind often swung and increased to create a fast downwind finish for over half of the fleet.
