RG/DF65 Summer Series #10 (29/10/22)

As a follow on from last weeks RG65 TT, the final event in the Summer series for the RG65 and DF65 took place today on a course that was very similar to last Sunday.  Only 5 RG65’s and one Df65 turned out this week, with a few busy on other activities and Neil who very kindly acted as our RO for today.  The RG’s sailed a full sized course, with the lone DF65 sailing to the same windward marks at the clubhouse end and then using the outer start mark as a rounding mark instead of the gate used by the RG65’s

Race 1 started bang on time, with several different options and opinions on which rig to choose in the slightly gusty 6 to 10 knot breeze.  Was it a full size swing rig, low aspect swing or full size conventional?  Peter started well and took the win in the first three races in his full size conventional, with John undecided on low aspect swing or conventional before finally opting for the swing rig and winning race 4. Peter then took race 5 again before a short break.

After the break, John took the wins in Races 6, 7, 10 and 11 with Peter picking up races 8 and 9.  Racing however was very close most of the time throughout the fleet all afternoon.  It was often down to whether anyone was in just the right spot to get the lift or have wind when nobody else did.

Our Lone DF65 was Clive Warren, who was well in the mix at the finish sailing on an A rig and a shorter course.

DF65 Social Racing 2022 – 26/10/22

Wind blowing over the houses normally seems to make for really shifty conditions, and today’s sailing didn’t disappoint.

Although the general direction was from the West, every leg of the course seemed to contain at least one beat, a reach, a run and a number of flat spots which everyone visited a number of times during the morning.

RO duties were shared out, with Dave kindly starting race 1, and although there were some concerns that the line might need altering it appeared to make no difference where anyone started in the gusty conditions.

Sally and Stan made a welcome reappearance after a summer break, and racing was very close with much place changing, boats changing tacks without changing direction, those in the lead being caught by the pack and a very tricky finish in the calm area on the houses side of the lake.

Mike ran out the winner after 10 races, with John and Alan tied on points but with 2nd going to Alan with more wins.

DF65 Social Racing 2022 – 19/10/22

Sailors arrived to a chilly South Easterly blowing almost straight down the lake from the clubhouse end. Dave, Alan and John elected to do some RG65 tuning still leaving a very respectable turnout of nine DF65s to race.

Mike De St Paer set a standard / windward leeward course with a higher top mark and spreader for the RGs who started together with the DFs.

The starts were interesting – not always for the right reasons – with some hefty gusts catching skippers out and resulting in quite a bit of contact, and some minor gear failures also affected a few boats resulting in the odd missed start.

After ten races, with four wins and some consistent sailing, John Carlin ran out the winner ahead of James Douglas who tied on points with Neil Westbrook, but was ahead on countback.

Racing was very close right across the fleet, with John Beech wining race 9, and Frans King and Clive Warren both getting a 2nd during the day.

The final positions were as follows.

DF65 Social Racing 2022 12/10/22

Conditions could best be described as “tricky” although several other words were used during the morning. What little wind we had was very light and variable, coming mostly from the clubhouse end, so generally a southerly or South Easterly or something like that!

With 12 sailors, including a visitor from Fleetwood, Garry Benson.  Dave Williams kindly elected to act as Race Officer, whilst Neil Westbrook set up the marks for the course.

After 8 races, it was decided to call it a day, as the breeze had dropped away to almost nothing, and getting selectively becalmed was the order of the day, which made the race results a bit hit and miss.  However, the sun shone, it didn’t rain and the lake was looking very clean and clear, so we couldn’t really complain, and it was good to welcome two new members to the racing today.

DF65 Social Racing 2022 (5/10/22)

‘Exceedingly British weather ‘ !!
Nine sailors arrived expecting high winds probably down to B suit but no; heavy rain and a good A+ wind which gradually diminished to a flat calm for the final race.
Very close racing at the front end of the fleet with only 3 points between the top 4 boats with James and Alan on equal points resulting in a count back.

DF65 Social Racing 2022 – 28/9/22

Very light wind again at the start of the racing, so a course just using half the lake was set which turned out to be quite successful.

Starting at the Clubhouse end to a windward mark just past the normal finish mark, port to a spreader, down to the gate and finish halfway. After the first two races the wind did increase and some very competitive racing took place with some very close finishes, at the end of the racing just 2 points separating the first four.

All the starts were brilliant with no call backs or general recalls. Eleven races were held with the usual two lap race to finish. Thanks to Dave for RO.
